@CityEdmonton - The Toronto Zoo has wisely and compassionately decided to send their three elephants to the PAWS sanctuary. When will the Edmonton Zoo do the same for Lucy? The habitats at the PAWS sanctuary or the one in Tennessee are eminently superior to those at your zoo, and in fact, are elephant paradise by comparison, with acres of land to roam and ponds to splash in. Lucy deserves to spend whatever years she has left enjoying the freedom these sanctuaries offer.

The Toronto Zoo has wisely decided to send their three elephants to the PAWS sanctuary in N. California sometime in 2012. When will the Edmonton Valley Zoo do the same for Lucy? Everyone can see she is distressed and that the conditions she is living in at the zoo are totally unsuitable for an elephant. The PAWS sanctuary by comparison is elephant paradise with acres to roam and pools to splash in. It's heartbreaking to think that Lucy may never have the chance to enjoy this kind of freedom.

It is now December 3, 2009. The long term weather forecast for Edmonton indicates the temperature during the next two weeks will drop to minus 29 Celsius. In this video the vet claims that body mass and subcutaneous fat will insulate Lucy during cold weather. Northern mammoths and mastodons had thick blubber layers and hair up to a foot long. Lucy is a tropical animal from Sri Lanka. No blubber. No fur. Pretty simple stuff. Miserable for Lucy.

All that spews out of your mouth is propaganda...what are you telling the world about your town..you are in so much denial ....I bet you're even starting to believe this crap yourself...look at Maggie at PAWS, that was another ele that couldn't leave her prison either..that's a happy ele who gets to be an ele and escaped her prison...you people are disgusting examples of greedy humans

You people can justify keeping this elephant in that cold solitary environment in so many ways...but it doesn't change the facts and the solitary life is so sad....I've used the analogy of the man in california that kidnapped the 11 year old and held her captive for 18 years....now that he has been caught he says it wasn't like that she was happy..This is the same situation....if Lucy could talk I'm sure she would not have the same take on her imprisonment as you people do... MONEY MONEY MONEY

Average lifespan for a zoo elephant is 38 years. Otherwise, it is 50 - 70, even 80 years. Maybe you could get the Alaska zoo to send you the $100,000 treadmill your expert recommended for Maggie, against the opinions of 10 other experts. She refused to use it & is now thriving at PAWS sanctuary. He is also the veterinarian of record in the notorious Hawthorn Corp. elephant abuse scandal. Let a truly independent panel decide what is in Lucy's best interests, not a shill for the zoo industry.

Please consider the 65 page report by a respected veterinarian/zoologist freely available online: "One Veterinarians Search for Truth in the Lucy the Elephant Debate" Lucy spends 75% of her time alone in her small concrete cell/cage - because that's where she is outside of zoo hours & for most of Edmonton's winter. The Zoo is also working with a rehabilitation therapist to ensure Lucy has physical activities in winter and summer months. Exercise and weight reduction is beneficial to Lucy, especially in regard to her respiratory problem. A third-party specialist has concluded moving Lucy would be life-threatening because her respiratory problem makes it difficult for her to breathe when she is under stress.

Lucy is well cared for at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. On all but the coldest days, Lucy enjoys going for several shorter walks each day and then returns to her heated barn. When it is very cold, Lucy and her caregivers stay in the climate controlled barn.

A leading expert says moving Lucy would put her life at risk. Lucy has no foot issues. She receives excellent care in managing her arthritis, a condition that's not uncommon in 34-year-old elephants.
