Indonesia- Environmentalists Urge for New Laws to Protect Environment

Environmentalists are urging a major review of regulations that protect the forest and environment in Indonesia.

Some experts say rapid destruction of rainforests is one of the main causes for climate change.

Indonesian jungles are giving way to plantations for palm oil and wood for consumer products.

This has led to massive deforestation as companies take advantage of lax laws and investment incentives to plant profitable products, instead of conserving the environment for future generations.

Indonesia is a significant contributor to the world's lungs with its forest.

According to the latest U.N. environmental reports, deforestation accounts for up to 25 percent of global emissions.

"The forestry sector is one of the main sectors that contributes to climate change caused by logging or destructive logging. We have seen the correlation through the number of licenses given to companies that turn forests into plantation forests for wood supplies.

Indonesia produces almost 3.6 gigatons of carbon emissions annually.

Today it is a massive disaster and will be even worse and Indonesia will be shamed in international forums. We know that in the G20 meeting last September at Pittsburgh SBY (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) committed to reduce emissions by 26 percent in 2020 but at the same time he has announced plans for 12.9 million hectares of palm oil plantations in natural forests.

International demand driving intensive agriculture, logging and ranching across Indonesia, is proving an unstopable force for deforestation.
