  • I am running 2 external HDs both terabytes but I run them in RAID One so that two duplicate HDs in each one back up everything to two seperate 500 gig HDs making up the terabyte external... This way if any HD ever crashes it has a clone.... I NEVER lose anything...

I have over 750 Gigs of video...

    I have made 1100 videos...

I lose nothing... Use Western Digital terabyte externals in RAID one...

    Problem solved....

  • Now that's a great solution. I'd love to be able to have that technology, and I remember working in IT with RAID many years ago, but I have never successfully applied that at home. Not to mention my main struggle is due to money (not being able currently to afford much more than what I have) so I'm constantly compressing and living in panic :) But I do backup meticulously.

  • My camera uses 1 CF card, and 1 xD card. I'm going to buy a bigger one, but right now I have 1 gig on each card. And my camera lets me choose the download format. I download as mov. I keep everything backed up to a 300 gig external hard drive. After I create a video for You Tube, I always export as MPEG4, then upload. Until the footage is used, it stays in mov format.

  • I was just thinking about you! No joke, I missed you. You know, I always though you were very revolutionary when you once spoke to me of CF cards. I said why didn't I think of this before - and your quality is great, possibly due to the MPEG4. I upload .WMV files. Do you ever think of backing up the backup on your 300gig drive? That's the main problem I have now, lack of space and backing up for the fear (which has already happened) of losing a hard drive. Family vids, YT vids - good memories.

  • haha..wow mate...u shoot too much footage..lol..I only save my finished edited movies...in WMV formatt..I delete evrything else..I have over 100 YT movies saved..using up less than 10 gig totall..Not perfect quality I must admit..but fine for YT..My cam has a "youTube" setting for shooting..so the files are allready compressed before I DL them to my puter...cool...Nice to se ya agin mate...

  • Pete I'm glad you stopped by mate! Very cool to have those files compressed before you actually transfer to the computer. I'm very interested in how other people do it and in the end I think it comes down to what's fine for YT. So 100 vids in 10 gigs. Yeah I have at least year worth of video left for YT lol - so I'm stocking up on the beer for more compressing. I'm losing my life here ;)

  • what it you just stop hanging around with a camera and hang out with your girlfriend, family or something. Thats not a harmful solution.

  • I have a mac and I have the same problem, tons of footage that I haven't used yet but don't want to delete it so I'm on my second hard drive.

  • *Love those glasses.

I hope someone here gave you some good info for your problem. You look good, diet is working for ya.

  • I share your problem John & i've found it very frustrating as well. I have a 250GB external HD as a back up & like you have loads of music on mp3.

What i've started doing is capturing the raw footage via Window Movie Maker. It might not be perfect, but it's a pretty good option :)

  • I don't make much worth worrying about losing.

  • only using my web cam (logitec web cam basic model) I dont have too much difficulty with compression...my vids are prity crap any way :¬D but yeah even with the resolution I get with my web cam I am really peeved that it just gets compresseed even more....

ps love the soul patch of beared :¬D

  • First off, can I start by saying that this Vlog entry has earnt you a new subscriber (me!) THAT's how much I totally agree with your situation.

I use the movie mode on my Canon digital camera and that produces a 640x480 15fps AVI at a rate of about just under 1Mb per second - which ain't bad really. convertion to WMV helps further.

I don't have many videos on my channel yet but I've got a lot of unused raw footage on my hard drives (PC, Mac and External) and also burn stuff to DVD for backup

  • I've considered it, but there's only so much you can do. If the backup ever crashes, I'm going to hope the Geek Squad people really know what they're doing! LOL And I've been MIA lately cuz Brittany graduated Sunday and we had a big party for her. I have SO much footage from the last 2 weeks that I'm overwhelmed. I don't even know where to start o.O
