Was browsing through many motorsports videos like Group B and Baja 1000 stuff. Came by and saw this F-1 video and found it very interesting. But one thing left me confused? What exactly is "Kinetic Energy Recovery" system? I've never heard of this
Clearly you don't know the power of these things. Murray even points out that Coulthard is toying with the road cars on the final corner - he's nowhere near full throttle until you see that 'good turbo charge at the end', even then it doesn't look to me like he's opened the throttle completely.
There's plenty technology that could have been used to give us near 300mph racing.
'Ground effect' - Air sucked from underneath the car for more downforce. Search for Fan Car. If the car lifts, downforce is lost and this was a factor in the death of Gilles Villeneuve. Ground effect was faded out and this is why all F1 cars have a flat chassis.
Turbos were banned in '89 and the cars were restricted to 3000cc in '95 both for safety reasons.
I'd love 300mph racing, too, but it's just not safe =(
