United Nations, New York, 16 March 2010 - The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is observed every year on the 21 March, was proclaimed by the General Assembly in 1966. On that day, six years earlier, 69 people were killed when the police opened fire at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa. The victims were protesting against certain apartheid laws.
For this year's commemoration of the Day, a screening of the movie Invictus took place at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 16 March.
Remarks were given by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay and the Permanent Representative of South Africa to the UN, H.E. Baso Sangqu, and the event was moderated by Under-Secretary-General Kiyotaka Akasaka.
There was a question and answer discussion with Invictus Producer Lori McCreary; the High Commissioner; and Mr. Nicholas Haysom, Director of Political Affairs, Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), immediately following the film.
