The beauty of poetry (and song lyrics are poetry) is that it takes something common to the human existance and frames it in a way everyone gets something out of - yes the author had a specific meaning and maybe others see/share it, but everyone brings themselves to it - and the meanings become personal. Whatever works for you. You want to see religion in this, that's ok. You want to see a human relationship that's good too. Yoy want to get more metaphorical? Go for it! It's all right.
