Trichocereus macrogonus is the one with the thick stems. There are 60 species of trichocereus. Some produce psychoactive alkaloids.
Opuntia tuna, the one in and behind the Trichocereus macrogonus,is also known as Elephant Ear Prickly Pear and Tuna Prickly Pear.

  • That's probably illegal. I think this is one of the sort that is used for producing mescalin. I read some of those books by Carlos Castaneda about that sort of thing but he made a lot of that up. Interesting to read, though.

  • they can grow 14 inches or more per growing season. I have many Trichocereus/Echinopsis varieties how tall did it look??

  • They grow faster than I thought then. I think it must have been about 8ft (2.5m) tall.

  • I was only there for a short time. I expect it's at least 20 or 30 years old because this sort of plant doesn't grow very quickly. You might find an email address for the Botany department of Leicester University with a search and ask there.

  • yep it was probably 5 to 10 years old then. Beautiful cactus though :-)
