This is a review of the 42" Panasonic Viera TC-P42X1 Plasma TV. It's an awesome 720p display and has ZERO visual lag. The display's built-in speakers have audio lad, but connecting A/V equipment to external speakers eliminates this problem. So this display is perfect for music games such as beatmaniaIIDX, DanceDanceRevolution, etc. I play two IIDX songs to demonstrate. The timing has not been adjusted at all in the game.

Yes, my voice is deep, but it's not THAT deep. Cheap camera microphones just do that.

  • the viera is great (possibly the best HDTV you can get) but it still introduces about 20 ms of video and audio lag. listen to the pounding noises from your fingers hitting the keys, at 3:48, and listen to the music. you are hitting the keys early, which you need to do to get FGs on an HDTV. i love my viera but if you want to score well on IIDX, you need to keep your CRT

  • @poobslag I've compensated for audio lag by hooking up some PC speakers.

As for hitting the keys early, if you watch a video of me playing on a CRT (/watch?v=crHeFCOLJ84), I'm still hitting the keys a bit ahead of the beat. That's the way the Troopers timing window is. Empress's timing is more on-beat.

Besides, 20ms is less than 2 frames @ 60fps, which isn't a huge difference. I don't stare at the red line anyway.

That aside, thanks for doing testing! I tried but wasn't very successful.

  • @MdXMaxX so - what i've just done at home, is i wired my PS2's audio out directly to my sound system, instead of routing through the TV. that way the audio is zero lag - and it's totally impossible to notice the 20 ms "out of syncness". this way i can get FGs playing directly on the beat - i don't know much about troopers, but with earlier mixes, i get FGs playing on beat with this setup, just like on a CRT... i don't need to account for it by playing a couple ms early. you should try it!!

  • @poobslag That's essentially what I've done, just with PC speakers instead of my surround system. I think my surround system presents a little more lag than the PC speakers.

  • have to say ... this game really gay

  • @lonkow You mean the video for the first song? It's just one song...

  • Ps2??? Realy?

  • Why would you be playing the PS2 when you have an Xbox 360? lol

  • In plasma TVs, the old consoles like the PS2, have decent graphics, but in LCD TVs, LED video games old, they get horrible graphics full of jaggies, blur, this is a problem with LCD, LEDs they will have only one good image quality when they are receiving a signal from the same resolution as its native resolution, plasmas are good even with images out of its native resolution.

  • @lZaZaBoYl from my experience the TV has about 20 ms of audio lag. i tested it using one of the "wild gunman" style games on the NES. on a CRT i was regularly in the 9-10 ms range. on the viera i was regularly in the 11-12 ms range. for a music game like IIDX, it's a small enough difference that you can compensate by hitting notes a little early like MdXMaxX does here. It's a very very small amount of lag.
