Trailer for John Hillcoat's long delayed adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pullitzer Prize-wining novel The Road. Viggo Mortensen plays the father of a young boy, struggling to stay alive and reach the coast before Winter sets in some years after an unspecified cataclysmic event. Together they must survive the harsh elements, bands of marauding cannibals and near-starvation, whilst attempting to 'carry the fire' - retain their humanity and a sense of moral purpose in a world turned on its head.
Charlize Theron co-stars as the boys mother, in a role greatly expanded from the original novel.
Note: The stock footage that opens this trailer, which suggests some kind of natural disaster, has been confirmed NOT to be in the finished film. This trailer was made under the aegis of producer Bob Weinstein in order to suggest the movie is far more mainstream that the source novel suggests - hence the action orientated footage and quick-cutting. Hollwyood moneymen, eh?

The film, originally scheduled for an October/November 2008 release is set to hit theaters in October 2009.

  • OMG! i'm glad i read the book first. well...listened to the audiobook since i didn't have any money to buy the book, or library card...but it was still WOW! I hope they keep it as detailed as the story described things.

  • Early reviews have been mixed, but it's sounding good to me.

The audiobook is very good, by the way. One of the best audiobooks out there - World War Z is another good one you might like to check out.

  • Mmmm back to a good old post-apocalyptic story, a art-form of it's on. This looks like it has the potential to be good.

Uh, by the way Kasper, did you see the Happening?

  • Oh yes, I did see it indeed. Absolutely fucking terrible.

I'm worried about this film version of The Road though, trailer makes it look like an action flick - and the book really isn't that kind of story - plus all that stuff at the start of the trailer, with the climate change, isn't in the novel where the apocalypse is never explained. Apparently it was added for the trailer (but not in the film itself) so as not to alienate the popcorn guzzling masses. I hope that's true.

  • There was no main female character in the Novel. I vaguely remember flashback scenes of when they were still a family. But from the look of this trailer, it looks awful. The book is one of the best in our generation.

And by the way, The Happening was a freaking great movie. People who hate on M. Night Shyamalan are crazy. The only thing he's ever screwed up was The Last Airbender. His movies are always original and very deep.

  • when does this get released on dvd ?

  • Read the book. It is incredibly depressing, but one of the best fictional books I have read in ages. Cormac McCarthy is one of the greatest authors of this generation.

  • Hmmm, now I have to decide if I should read the book or watch the film. To watch a film that is based on a book is too often an experience in agony.

I can't believe I went to the cinema to watch the Happening. Reason was that I had just watched 'Lady In Water' and I quite liked it so I took my chance with the Happening. Sigh, never again I promise.

Did you see Star Trek BTW? At least that was entertaining. I wish they would have tried cannon though.

  • looks damn good
