  • I dont understand why do you put the anti bumping in the solution?? and what is the purpose of the cool water coming from the tap??

    Please help!

  • The anti-bumping granules ensure that the solution boils in a controlled way. Without them, the solution is likely to 'bump' as it's heated, sending the solution up the condenser and perhaps out of the top.

The cool water is to keep the condenser cool so it can continue to condense the solvent vapour. Without the cold water the condenser would warm up more and more, and the vapour would pass through without condensing.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thank you very much for the video! It's very interesting!

What I don't get is its purpose..Does the mixture do change it's chemical composition as an effect of the boiling? Is it a separation process or a chemical reaction (for instance some thermal cracking).

  • @Panzer0127 Bumping can also be problematic in that it could break the round-bottom flask.

  • Oh! I now know what reflux means... In my A-level organic chemistry studies, I have been told to use either the term "reflux" or "heat". But now I guess the "reflux" would be more accurate to describe such organic reactions.

  • This is a perfect video, thank you so much!

I've been reading and reading, and I had a pretty good picture in my head how it looks/works, thanks for taking the time to do a little demonstration, it really cemented my thoughts.

Maybe one more video on a Soxhlet?

  • can u plz give d whole procedure of reflux? I couldn't follow ur accent.

  • There is no point in having a utility clamp on the condenser and a clamp on the neck of the RBF. if you would have put the clamp around the neck of the RBF. you wouldn't need a nother clamp.
