@jearks - it sounds like he could be aspirating on thin liquids. A delayed swallow can be the possible cause of this. Consult a doctor and get an SLP referral for a bedside swallow exam and possibly mbss

i am a private nurse and I have a post-stroke patient. he can actually eat but the problem is on swallowing especially when he drinks water. He can swallow solid foods especially when chewed properly, but when he drinks water, he tends to cough and appears like choking. What's the possible cause of this problem and what are the remedies to minimize the problem?Thank you.
@jearks, we encourage you to reach out to Dr. Feinberg directly. You can find him on Hoag.org searching under "Find a Doctor."
