The origin of Ashbringer is revealed at the Southshore Inn in the Caverns of Time: Old Hillsbrad. Commander Mograine invoked a meeting with his friends to reveal a mysterious artifact. With it, a weapon known as Ashbringer would be created to destroy the undead.

@TheDrummerJ medivh was sargeras' substitute avatar, sargeras controlled medivh through his mother aygwynn (or however you spell it) and summoned the orcs through the dark portal, he was then killed by his fellow comrades and his spirit lived on as a prophet to warn the mortal races of the comming of the burning legion to do his bit as a guardian of tirisfal and undo what he did whilst sargeras was in control. (sargeras' spirit was banished upon his death).

@TjuvLarm Yes, but everyone except Dwarves and Humans (maybe Gnomes too) has a buff put on them that makes you look like a human, since most of the races back when this happened were either unknown to humans or were human's enemies.
