Jonah started out with Jimmie Lunceford, played with the Fletcher Henderson and Benny Carter bands and was a long-time member of the Cab Calloway Orchestra (playing alongside Dizzy Gillespie). And then when the Swing Era was coming to an end in the mid-1950's, he was about to give it up when he was offerred a date at the Embers in New York City....so long as he "muted" the music so people could eat. Reluctantly, he accepted and in so doing forced himself to find a way to play jazz "quietly". He muted his trumpet and here was born the Jonah Jones Quartet and a very unique jazz sound that played for a number of years thereafter at the Embers and Rainbow Room in New York and as an undercard and lounge act in Las Vegas.
