Helium balloon cluster Launch - Pilot John Ninomiya

How many helium balloons does it take to lift a grown man off the ground?? Here's your answer! I really don't remember the exact number, sorry, don't ask!

This Cluster Balloon Launch by Pilot John Ninomiya, was at the 2005 Ashland Hot Air Balloon Festival in Ashland, Ohio. This was a specialty event and flight that drew a large crowd of watchers. John's balloon crew filled the helium balloons and attached them in clusters to John's special flight harness. The regular shaped hot air balloon in this video lifts off just prior to the cluster lift-off to monitor John's flight and take video and photos from the air. "Don't try this at home" as the saying goes! I was ground crewing for the 84 Lumber "Lumberjack" balloon.

I do believe that the pilot pulls one balloon down by the lanyard and can release the air manually out of the balloon.....a little or a lot..... The "BB gun" method as you saw on 'mythbusters' works, but however it is unpredictable to the loss of lift with the removal of one complete balloon. Too much loss of lift in one moment, and your descent rate is too high and either will cause a hard landing or be fatal. "LIFT" is also different at any higher altitudes with thinner atmospheric pressure
