Sadly, Dawn Hayes no longer hosts the lottery. The drawings returned to WCVB in August 2004 and they dropped the idea of a present host. Instead a voice-over announces already-drawn numbers on the screen. :(
However, you are right that CVB's original lottery theme was different; the first choice of music was in a smiliar pitch to Kalehoff's "Lottery" theme. It wasn't until somewhere around the fall of 1994 that the music abruptly changed the the version we're more familiar with. It would be quite a find to dig up a CVB drawing from that 1st theme period, just to remember what the melody was like. I wonder why they changed it so soon?
I remember the switch very well and it was February '94. It was sweeps month, so 'CVB most likely wanted The Lottery acquisition when the ratings and attn. really counted. Also, that would have been quite strange for the WHDH intro to be used (if even for a short time) on 'CVB. The 1994-98 graphics were used right from the switch day as I recall.
I actually just remembered something else. I don't remember the exact date of the switch, but somehow I think it was either March 17th or March 14th. But I remember like the FIRST FEW WEEKS of it being on WCVB, it still had the old intro sequence from WHDH (with the 7 chopped off, of course), and different music, which sounded more like the old theme on WHDH, but it wasn't the same. But after a few weeks, they switched to the music and graphis they had up until 1998 when it moved to WBZ.
I also remember when the numeric columns were taken out in the summer of '93, which was the earliest indication of the station ownership change. Their short-lived revamped set looked closer to the blue one they had on 'CVB, maybe w/ a few differences.
WHDH changed to the current 7 logo in January 1994 as a part of their metamorphosis into being a Sunbeam station. They officially became a Sunbeam station in June of '93, with the main change being that of the news department, but it took well over 6 months to get everything converted. Ed Ansin (current owner of 7) most likely didn't want the lottery on his station, so THE LOTTERY struck a deal with 'CVB to move the drawings over in Feb. 1994.
Interestingly enough, WHDH stopped carrying Lottery Live 2 months later, and it moved to WCVB. I bet the reason why they changed their logo was because they knew Lottery Live was ending.
Cool. I think I used a database with past lottery number drawings I found on the web.

How do you know this? It's cool, because I have a friend who was born on that very day.
