@DYNODRUM This is the beauty of our art form.... take the head and bend it, reshape it ...totally depart from it...carry it to outer space...and suddenly bring it back home when least expected by the listener.....Betty was the master of that approach..and to some extent...Mel Torme, and most certainly Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling...The tune "Sunshine of your Love" by Cream in the 60s' started out of sync at the recording session with Ginger Baker playing on 1+3 instread of 2+4. It stayed in!
@postbop Seems Betty leaned over to Dave at the very start and asked for a slower tempo. He dropped the speed but it took a bit to get together. Regardless, it is a brilliant performance by both.
@postbop I understand what you are saying as I thought that too, but when I watched his face as they played I believe that she was trying to underplay the moment and keep it gentle so that he could find the direction that he would feel comfortable with as he is also an improvisationalist and together they found the conversation that they did.
a most talented and beautiful performer, sadly missed.
Dave Holland is a superb player, and a gentleman.
A wonderful pairing for a classic tune
