Federer performs the split step every time the opponent hits the tennis ball and he is always at the Top of the Hop as the ball contacts the opponent's racket. This timing will allow the player the maximum acceleration if they land on the foot opposite to the side the ball is coming. When shots are directed at Federer he does not have to land on one or the other foot, but for wide hit shots this will enable him to better cover the shot.
