At 54, there's no question Gagne was worn out by a long match like this but that a man in his 50s could do this attests to his condition for his age.
This illustrates one of the big differences between wrestlers in that era that was just about at an end by the early 1980s and wrestlers now and that is that, back then, whatever else they may have been, they were genuinely wrestlers. I'm not knocking how it is now. It's just the truth. In those days, they were still wrestlers.

Verne Gagne was showing his age here. He looked to be really gassed during the break between falls & I don't think he was just selling it.

Verne would 54 (his birthday is 26 Feb. 1926) in this match, Baba is 5 days away from celebrating his 43rd birthday (23 January 1938)
