Hallo!

Danke

@Energermany not true a car alternator works fine, you just need better gear ratio!

Good work, Energermany. I wonder if a larger front gear (sprocket?) might help. This video is a perfect people's experiment in recycling old bicycles!

you are going to continue to have issues cause your car alternator has to spin at thousands of RPM to make 12V but other then that you have a great set up.

Hi put a bike tube around the weel put a drive belt weel on your motor connect the two and away you go one turn of the weel will turn your motor 5/6 times. Hope this helped

If you will increase your chain length and make a gigantic sprocket at least the size of the bicycle wheel then the ratio will increase the amount of the RPM :) Your drive sprocket is too small :(

Beside advice embeddedprogrammer gave you, you should consider building an alternator! There are plans on Internet for building them for <150RPM. You build them for your needs.
Gearing your turbine will make pretty big load that will affect starting point at lower wind speeds. If wind is not consistent, it will rarely start at all.
Costs for alternator are price for permanent magnets, wire, and time. But it will pay off
Good luck,
Matthew

I think you are very close to running generator without adding the rotating vent. Since this is a drag based turbine and output in torque is linearly proportional to the cross-sectional area that hits the wind, I would first try to increase the number of wings from 4 to 16 and I think it would run the generator ok without modification. This would then look more like a squirrel cage fan but would still have its simplicity.
Hi,
I'm building my first VAWT now and have hit a problem. What alternator to use? I've got no money to spend on a decent one, so I've been looking around for old machines which have stepper motors or alternators and solenoids.
What can you recommend? My project is small, so something which works on a low rpm would be ideal.
Thanks for any suggestions :)

Hi JamboyStu,
you are welcome.
Search for stepper motor basics on Google, there is a site reuk.... there are some great informations abot stepper motors, i built my bridgerectifier for my harvested stepper-motors with that information.
A caralternator is useless, if you not rewind the coils.

Hi Stef, I think your gear shifting method is really effective with PMA - permanent magnet alternator which can give a very reasonable output even at low rpm. When you figure out how much amount of voltage and amperage you want this to produce, then it should be easy enough with the construction part of the homemade PMA. You might also need to measure the wind speed and get the average of it. Regards, Jon

Our garden is not the right place for a thing like that, i always get turbulences, around of the garden are trees, garages, higher buildings.
The ppl are living around me, are not happy about my installation(s), its causing problems, and i dont have the wish to discuss with those.
greetings Stefan
