I was forced to buy Kindle. If you live outside of the US, EU, Austrailia and certain well advanced Asian countries, then you do not usually have many English libraries selling the books you need. This means you are forced to buy those books via the internet anyway and pay a lot of additional international shipping fees. I am not a fan of exchanging good old books for this junk, but I am forced to unless I want to waste tons of money on constant international shipping fees.... sucks

I also have the Kindle 2, which I use all the time. Just a tip for those who doesn't have it, I came across a website when I was searching for "Kindle" that is having a really simple contest where you could win a Kindle 2 simply by looking for an ad on Americanlisted

you know what causes eye strain? Looking at something close to your face for extended periods of time. like ebook readers. *gasp...

But Kindle's power savings are real.

I am thinking about the Kindle 2. I have a few questions.

-Can I read this the dark?
-Are there any free books to download?
-The screen seems really small. Do people find this a major flaw?
-Are newspapers downloaded daily to the kindle? How do you delete older newspapers?
-Is there a way to buy books without using a credit card (i.e. an Amazon Gift Card)

ok I'm try to answer your questions.
-No this doesn't use a backlight to save battery & since it uses the eink display to go easy on the eyes. Just buy one of those $10 booklights.

-Amazon does have specials on some book & sales. They do offer a free preview download for every book. (ex: the 1st chapter)

-Not at all. The text is very nice & easy to read. You can make the text smaller to get more words on the page but the screen isn't that small. So I really don't see a problem in screen size.

-You can program the kindle to download any newpaper offered in the amazon store daily. So in the morning you will have the lastest copy of your local or favorite newpaper. You can remove old issues & books from your libary in the menu.

-if its dark just turn on the text to speech and listen to the book.
-Yes, there are free books to download. There are different free books available weekly as well as public domain books(classic literature). There are more free books than you could ever actually read. just sort by price and you'll find them- check free book lists on amazon listmania
-the size is not much different than a small paperback, you can change the font size
-if you buy them online you should be able to use a gift card
