May 2, 2008: This monster of a machine with weird sirens and horns was out and about cleaning the ballast, as part of the maintenance before changing the ties on track 2. Seen at MP 76.7, then 77.5, and coming back in the afternoon at 77.5 again.
This machine is a Shoulder Ballast Cleaner. We have the exact same machine here in Australia. It cleans the ballast just outside the sleepers (ties) by those bucket wheels picking up the rock and depositing it through the screening processor with the waste being deposited by the conveyor to the sides of the track. It is beast of a machine.

The sirens is the HOT rail warning. Letting the employees know that there is a train coming. Also used to alert people of their presence.

That's a wild machine. I'd love to see one in action. I didn't know they had sirens on them.
