On December 3, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Judy Chu (R-CA), DREAM Act students, LA community college leaders and other city leaders gathered at the East LA Community College for a press conference on the DREAM Act.
Chu claimed "we are closer than we have ever been" to pass the DREAM Act, and urged everyone to call senators to express their support. I got the opportunity to talk to her after the press conference, and she told me the critical senators are the following: Susan Collins (ME), Sam Brownback (KS), Claire McCaskill (MO), Joe Manchin (WV) and Lindsey Graham (SC).
If the bill is passed, it would give children of undocumented workers a path to become a US citizen by either getting a college education, or by serving in the armed forces after passing a background check, and meeting other requirements.
The DREAM Act could be the down payment to fix the broken immigration system in our country, because we are in desperate need of an immigration reform. There is no line for DREAMers to stand in. This would fix part of the problem, because all children have the right to a higher education, and the right to serve their country.
It is reported the DREAM Act would reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion over the next 10 years, and would generate between $1.4 trillion and $3.6 trillion in income over a 40-year period. It would help our country recuperate from it's suffering economy.
The DREAM Act is being voted in the Senate next week. If you support the DREAM Act, please call your Senators at 1-866-587-610. Don't just DREAM, but act!
