I can't find two old fashioned recipes that are nearly the same in preparation or ingredients. All of them claim to be the "original" or "old fashion" old fashioned. Sad drinker is sad.

This recipe is closer than most, but do yourself a favor: mix ingredients in a separate glass with a substantial amount of ice and stir it for 30–45 seconds before straining it into your glass. If you don't have large ice cubes, you probably don't want to put any ice in the glass itself. Either way, put your glass in the freezer for a few minutes while you do your mixing (prevent heating up your drink when poured) and use an orange twist (not lemon).

Yes and no. It is more important that you cool and dilute your drink the appropriate amount prior to putting it in the glass, which is something almost every aimed-at-beginners video fails to mention. Then you want to add as much volume of ice as possible in as little of surface area as possible, which is why giant ice cubes are employed (surprise, it's not just because it looks fancy).

That looked like closer to 4 oz. of Rye, but that's merely an observation, not a complaint.

    Cheers.

THANK YOU!!! I have to bartend tonight for my first time and this was the drink that scared me if someone ordered. I leave this feeling very confident now!

Orange definitely, altho lemon seems alright with rye but i'd rather leave it out if i dont have an orange.

club soda is optional, depends if u want ur drink alil watered down, doesn't make a huge difference if ur using small enough amounts

Very common rookie mistake made here.. "little ice to not over water the drink" The spirit is room temperature... Adding little ice is only going to make the ice melt faster thus adding more water to the drink.. ANY cocktail you make, you want to make sure to fill the glass with as much ice as possible to cool the spirit and keep the ice from melting.
