I live in Dana Point, California. It likes to come back at night and then again in the early morning, and it leaves (or at least it goes quiet) at when I turn on the heater extra high. My grandma has one in her house too, and she lives in San Juan Capistrano, California (near the border between Dana Point & San Juan). I don't hear any skittering, though my grandma sometimes hears little bumps. I don't think it's a rat or a bug because I'd hear the rat making noises and I don't think a bug would keep coming back. I've heard "Bacchus" or "Beeps" (the two names we've given our little problem), since early December, but in March he became a more regular visitor. I wouldn't mind except that his piercing chirps keep me up all night. Once the heater was broken, and he was chirping all day, ceaselessly. What could he be eating in there? I think we might have termites, so he could be eating those. I think that, whatever he is, he is alone. I think he is inside my vents, because I can hear the chirp coming from different points in my room at different times. I don't want him to die, I just want him to leave.

  • to anyone who may someday have this problem: it is a smoke detector. change the batteries on all of your smoke detectors before calling animal control and paying money. Just . Trust. Me.

  • I did a search and found myself here... and this is exactly what we're experiencing - and it is not the smoke detector. It's very intermittent... and does not stop when I try to mimic the sound. But it is very loud and I never hear rustling or movement. When I make noises, it will usually stop... does anyone know what sort of outdoor animal makes this noise?

  • i thought that sound in my home was the smoke detector with a dying battery. Ive heard the smoke detector make that sound many times in past years. Today i heard it again...much much lounder....wasnt coming from the smoke detector. the sound kept on moving. i desided to make alot of noise for about 30 seconds and the noise went away.....now dont YOU feel stupid for making fun of the person who posted the video? Im pretty sure i have a bat.
