Accident happened casue stuff did not practice safe working temperature , REad a bit more ,, NOW NEW nuclear power plants in IRAN and couple have been build in CHINA ,Russia , Bulgaria are safest in the world.... BULGARIA today runs Chernobyl design , Nuclear power plant , and it did not explode ... OK ...

Why is it that Russia has such brilliant physicists and chemists but has always been so lacking in engineering. Leading to many catastrophic accidents like this one, Chernobyl, numerous Mayak accidents larger than Chernobyl, submarines, rockets, etc.

It's not always so much engineering as maintenance. Though I too must confess; all the Russian engineers I know now live in America.

Stefan Timoshenko was a Russian engineer who immigrated to the US after the Revolution. A brilliant engineer, his 70 year old textbooks are still considered valuable references.
The Timoshenko Medal is named after him.
