SelectPlusCedar Rapids Library Among Flood VictimsCedar Rapids Library Among Flood VictimsThe Associated PressA city library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is nearly a complete loss due to recent flooding. The entire ground floor was under several feet of water. (June 23)[Notes:wide shots of flooding last week] In Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- as flood waters recede -- the scope of the damage rises. But it's not just homes here that are lost ... [Notes:kgan material, inside shots of the loss]Priceless city treasures have been as well -- One example - this city library -- A look inside shows an entire floor that's now a wasteland of waterlogged books, shelves, and equipment. Little here survived.SOT: the recovery specialists are in there now, and they're not very optimistic that anything on the first floor is going to be saved. At one point Five feet of water rushed through here. [Notes:more shots inside the library] Even materials that were above the water line, were susceptible to mold and humidity damage. [Notes:kgan material from Iowa City]Meanwhile, more residents are returning finding similar damage in their own homes.SOT: the first thing that happens is you walk in and think Oh my, everything is just covered in Mud. SOT; no sense looking at it in a negative way, Iowans will bounce back . An estimated 35,000 people have been displaced by the floods in what the federal government describes as the biggest disaster it has faced since Hurricane Katrina. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

  • I cried when I found out the damage that happened to the library. :(

  • I was a library volunteer there for 10 years. How I loved that place.

  • Cedar Rapids is already well on it's way to rebuilding. I was a flood victim, and had a fully submerged basement and 3 feet of water on my main level. As soon as I was allowed back in my home, I was there cleaning, along with ALL of my neighbors. That's the difference between New Orleans and Iowa. I'm moving back home within the next couple of months. FEMA doesn't fix everything, residents do.

  • Cedar Rapids from my experience is agood city with good people. I feel bad for all of those who suffered from this flood. By the the way, I'm African-American. I don't can't related to the other poster angry direct toward Cedar Rapids. I met some good people there both black and white.

  • Cannot believe you would even say something this ignorant! Those poor people trying to cope with this do not deserve such stupid, pitifully insensitive remarks. Unbelievable....
