yep, riders are sitting still in the saddle. the tolt is one of the smoothest horse gaits, there is no up and down. the only motion in the rider's body is just a tiny bit in the hips, but it's not at all jarring.

That is not correct. A lot of horse breeds have more than the usual 3 gaits in different variations - all over the world. Among them are very old breeds like the Icelandic and newer ones like American Saddlebreds.
There are many gaited horses on this world, unfortunately they are still very unknown or have been forgotten in the shade of time.
And unfortunately in some countries (especially the USA) their natural gaits are too often awfully manipulated. Sorry guys, show is not everything!
