VERY REV. PROTOPRESBYTER STEPHEN DUTKO




BINGHAMTON, NY---(Bright Friday - April 24, 2009) Very Rev. Protopresbyter Stephen Dutko, Pastor Emeritus of St. Michael's Church, Binghamton, NY, peacefully Reposed in the Lord early this morning. Father Stephen was the eldest and still functioning Orthodox priest of the diocese, having marked his 92nd birthday on January 3. On May 10th of this year he would have celebrated his 67th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Holy Priesthood.




Fr. Stephen was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by His Eminence, the late Metropolitan Orestes at St. John's Church, Bridgeport, CT on May 10, 1942. He was the first pastor of St. Mary's in Buffalo from 1942-1947, when he assigned pastor of St. Michael's in Freeland, PA. He served as pastor of St. Michael's in Binghamton from September, 1961-July, 1991, when he assumed his present role as pastor emeritus.




A founding member and pastor director of the Diocesan Altar Boys' Retreat program, Father Stephen also served as a member of the diocesan consistory for more than 25 years.

Father Stephen will be forever known for his priestly zeal and faithful attention to the souls entrusted to his care and also for his deep love for and proficiency in the Prostopinje or Plain Chant singing tradition of our Diocese. The Priests Funeral service for Fr. Stephen will take place at St. Michael's Church in Binghamton, NY on Tuesday evening, April 28 at 7 PM. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10 AM. His Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas will preside, assisted by diocesan and area clergy.




May Almighty God Rest the Soul of His Newly Departed Servant, The Ever-memorable Protopresbyter Stephen in the Mansions of the Just, Where There is no Pain, Sorrow or Mourning, But Life Everlasting. May His Memory be Eternal, Vicnaja Jemu Pamjat, Christ is Risen!




n the Lord on Bright Friday, April 24, 2009 after a short illness. A priest forever, he celebrated the Velikden on April 19,2009. Ordained on May 10, 1942 his legacy will live on through the thirteen priestly vocations he nurtured during his priesthood. His love for, and knowledge of, prostopenije will live on forever.
