1969 International Loadstar/Ward School Bus (Part 2)

Here is the dashboard/control panel of the bus. It has a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission with hydraulic retarder.

I remember riding a very old sub bus back in the 80s, All I remember was it was all green inside, and the switchboard for the lights and things was all metal toggle switches... and for some reason I remember it being on the right side... and I remember someone was in the bus helping the driver figure out the old controls... it was very strange, only saw it once.

I wonder if it was a forward control type bus with the engine up under a hump and a flat front? Bluebird maybe? I don't know If I have seen any conventional older buses with the switch panel on the right side.

How does the hydraulic retarder work? I have never seen one.

I'm not sure if it is working properly...but I think it should work with the automatic transmission, maybe reversing the flow of the fluid to add resistance to the drive line to help slow it down.

I drive kids to school in a 2005 International IC300 it is a sweet ride. It handles like a dream in the frigging snow and god knows Massena NY get's enough snow

My family converted one of these to live in, and I grew up in one of these. (Except it was manual with a road ranger transmission.)

The six-speed Allison automatic used here is the old MT30 for the engine is gasoline. Otherwise, if the engine were a diesel the transmission would be either a model MT31 (light duty) or MT41 (mid-range). The MT30 and MT31 were replaced by the AT540 for 1970, while the MT40 and MT41 soldiered on until 1973, when they were replaced by the MT640 and MT650 (later MT643 and MT653DR).

I forgot that the '69 Loadstar Ward had those type of rims also, I also remember riding either a '68 or '69 Ward bus on a Ford B700 chassis in Maryland sometimes, It had the sloped roof at both ends, I think it had the 390 big block, I remember it had a standard 4 speed transmission, It migh've been a 4 and 2, I don't remember, I also remember riding a '69 or '70 GMC Ward bus in 5th grade here in Oregon, It had the 366 engine and also a 4 and 2 tranny, It was used as a substitute bus,

It's a very old memory from 1985-86 so it's very vaugue but I was watching a video just now of a 1980 International conversion bus and I remember those round vents on the dash... so maybe that was it.. and it might have been flat front, I want to say I remember not wanting to get on it because it was different looking and "Not my bus" but I'm not 100% sure.. I don't want to make something up and corrupt that very old memory lol
