Julesworks LLC, SAG featurette. "THE LIVES OF ANGELS" won the Genre Award for Best Short Comedy at the 2008 New York International and Independent Film and Video Festival. The 47 minute film was shot in New Mexico with an entirely New Mexico cast.
The NYIIFF ran for ten 10 days and showed over 330 films. Praise for ANGELS included: "charming", "funny", thought provoking", "sweet", "unique", and more. ANGELS is being considered for screenings at over 30 Festivals around the world including: Seattle, Ft. Lauderdale, Provincetown, Starz Denver, Newport, others in NYC and LA (including a screening of the NYIIFF in LA) many in Colorado including Boulder and Toofy and others around the Southwest, and in Europe, Canada and Australia.
In taking the film to Festivals, the goal, on top of showing off New Mexico talent, is to raise interest and financing for a feature which will focus on the power struggles between the angels and Devil and her assistant Beetle to control the world.
The cast includes an impressive lineup of New Mexico actors including: native son Raoul Trujillo (THE NEW WORLD, APOCALYPTO), Jihmi Kennedy (GUNG HO, GLORY), new resident of Santa Fe, making his return to film after four years, Will Arute, Jody Hegarty, Stephen Rubin (MIRAGE, RICK'S CANOE, BUMP IN THE NIGHT), JD Garfield (THE ASTRONAUT FRAMER, THE NORTH COUNTRY, CONSPIRACY), Nicholas Ballas (INTO THE WEST, THE TAO OF STEVE), Maura Dhu Studi, native daughter Jenny Gabrielle (FESTIVAL IN CANNES, THE ASTRONAUT FARMER), native son George Adelo (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN), introducing Loveless Johnson III with cameos by Aron Hawkins, Boril Radoyokov, Hugh Eliot, Jake Mulliken, Helena Shelton, Melanie Moore, Maggie Ryan, Rachel Palmer, Courtney Angermeir, and Lisa Hill.
The film was executive produced and directed by Stephen Rubin. Jonathan Lowe was Director of Photography and Editor. Megan O'Laughlin was Producer. The script was written by Stephen Rubin. Sound was recorded by Jason Reed with equipment and help kindly provided by Michael Becker. Set and Production Design was helped by Marisa Franz. Make up artist was Angelique Ortiz. Other crew include: Joe Picard, Eric Beyer, Chris Deistler, Mickey Browne, and Lenny Hoffman with Courtney Angermeier and John Macho as PA's. Still photography was done by Linda Carfagno. Backdrops were created by Jamie Chase with Anne Farrell doing the Special Effects. Jeremy Shattuck was music supervisor as well as composer with help from Dave McPherson and Jon Kurzweg. Soundtrack includes music by Goshen and Oklahoma's BuffaloFitz with an original song by Will Arute.
THE LIVES OF ANGELS is the tale of three loveable losers: Ralph Rudy aka Jade (Hegarty), Frankie Finkel (Arute) and Jules McGillicudy (Rubin), whose lives collide, thanks in part to their bartender Slappy (Garfield). Jade is an erudite and beautiful woman, slightly disheveled, who hangs out in bars reading good books. Finkel and McGillicudy are two somewhat aimless friends who fall into odd metaphysical conversations. Slappy is an overly friendly philosophizing bartender.
Intervening in their lives to give meaning and to match make Jules and Jade are five angels: Bugsy (Ballas), the boss, Trujillo (Castro) his feisty assistant, the loveable Chastity (Gabrielle), Paco (Johnson III), and Little Mickey (Adelo). Bugsy is the boss angel in charge of his four guardian angels who want raises and are trying to get into heaven. Bugsy sends his angels to Earth, each with a different "client". Meanwhile, the Devil (Studi) and her assistant, Beetle (Kennedy), conspire.
Shooting took place in the blue screen room of the Santa Fe Community College, at the Cowgirl, and at various outdoor locations around Santa Fe including the Cross of the Martyrs. Thanks to the NM Film Office, The City of Santa Fe, and all others who offered locations and assistance.
