Built in the early 1800's, the C&O canal's Catoctin creek aqueduct collapsed in 1973. Thanks to Dr. George Lewis, public and private money has been raised to restore this landmark, one of 11 stone aqueducts along the 184.5 mile towpath from Washington DC to Cumberland MD. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on April 24, 2010, with restoration completion scheduled in 2011.
