The GSA Federal Supply Service is the branch of the federal government that purchases goods and services. For some people, the mere mention of GSA suggests an immense bureaucracy. But behind these walls lies GSA Advantage, one of the largest and most efficient ecommerce portals in the world. The site averages two million hits a day, from 400,000 users worldwide and offers nearly seven and half million products. In the past eight years, weve processed 1.9 million orders for over a billion dollars. Weve been around so long, you could order from us a year before you could order from Amazon.com. The GSA Advantage is power by Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ to provide high availability, cross system integration. If you didnt have a good database technology, you couldnt do this because we have many, many tables that are in the Sybase data base and you need a vendor like Sybase to make it all work. The challenge was how to accommodate the growing product line and 50,000 new users each week. Our database is growing, growing and growing over the last nine years and one of the beauties of Sybase is that its not only fast as the system grows, it maintains the speed, but it also scales to handle our growth. But the success of GSA Advantage is more than just a front end web site. It is also supported by a very efficient supply chain. What we had before was this supply chain which was heavily invested in high technology on the front end, but it wasnt on the back end, and what we needed to do was create a supply chain that was a little bit more even. The solution was to build a new warehouse integrating state of the art RF technology. As the order is electronically processed by GSA Advantage, it is also sent down to our distribution center. Those orders then are electronically transmitted to a warehouse associate via a wrist mounted RF gun for the actual fulfillment process, assembly and shipment. We created a situation, with the RF equipment, for the associates at the working level, is actually easier and more effective to do it correctly than to do it incorrectly. We process through here about six to seven thousand orders a day, valued at approximately a million dollars a day. The ultimate recipient of this efficient supply chain is the taxpayer. One of the benefits of the Sybase technology is that it is fast and on a ROI basis we are estimating that there is a 35 million a year savings. The benefit to the taxpayer is that we dont have as much money invested in the sitting inventories. What we are finding out is that the movement of information is equally important to the movement of the box and efficiencies that are cheap by moving the information quickly; more effective to the right person, to the right place at the right time is reaping benefits because its actually increasing the velocity of the product through the center. Sybase is the underlying technology that allows us to do this and it saves taxpayers a lot of money.
