How are you assigning elevation?  How do you assign "sea level"?

The elevation of Mars is measured from its mean elevation, which is an average of its highs and lows relative to the center of the planet. This mean elevation is an imaginary sphere cutting across the globe, much like Earth's sea level surface that also cuts below the elevated continents.
