@Paris1832 That's right, she's no Patti LuPone - Lea is millions of trillions above and beyond LuPone, wiping the floor with her on all categories of musical theatre - singing, ACTING, voice, diction, EMOTION, interpretation, personality, humility (something good actors possess and Patti does not) presence and overall performance. You're right, Lea Salonga is not LuPone - and thank god for that.

I didn't think anyone could do better than Ruthie (I was never impressed with Ms. Lupone) - until Lea Salonga came along! Salonga's qualities make her perfect for difficult roles: an impressive ability to reflect the nuance of every emotion in her performance, solid vocals that know when to go strong and go soft on the notes, and impeccable diction that helps audiences understand every word she utters - fast or slow, loud or soft. She was the best Eponine; she's now THE BEST Fantine!

It's too bad they chose this venue for the concert... the performances were so good, and everyone clearly enjoyed themselves so much. Yet the mikes were tinny, the hall is cavernous...they should have held it at the same place where they had the 10th anniversary...and gotten the same tech crew in.

Yes, while Ruthie did a great job with this role and had her own attack to it, Lea is the one who had actually read the book and thoroughly studied Hugo's character before doing Fantine on stage. Vocally, Lea is superior. It is already a given that she has the best enunciation in the industry.

Compare Patti Lupone to Lea Salonga? What a joke. Patti Lupone is THE most overrated actress in broadway history. Just because she has a big personality or exaggerated vibrato does NOT warrant a big performance, which I have yet to see from her. Agree with Paris 1832 100%.

Probably coz' She read Fantine's chapter in the actual novel plus she is now a "real" mom to her lovely daughter Beverly Nicole :-)

This happens to be Lea's interpretation of the Chapter about Fantine in the UnaBridged Edition of the Novel Les Miserables. Ruthie was my first favorite singer/interpreter of this Immortal song however I am not quite sure though if She read the actual novel or not. After reading the full novel, I had more understanding of the characters in this musical. :-)
