A simple fire pit can be made from a used washing machine drum. Sturdy and portable, it also has pre-drilled air holes. I use this one in a temporary setup at my acreage, as well as on hunting trips in the fall. Though not as big or heavy as some, it offers good containment, and any old barbecue grill will cover the top easily.
Washer drum - Free (got mine from our own washer when the unit quit and needed replacing)
Sidewalk block - Free (it was partially cracked and about to be thrown out, new one is $3.95 where I live, but any large flat stone will work. It is only needed to keep the ground from catching on fire unseen below the pit, a dangerous problem with open pits dug into the forest floor when hunting)
Sand - Free (we have endless sand dunes in the river valley near where I live, so a couple pales were easy to gather)
A quick rinse with a garden house removes any ash stuck to the sides.
Nice... I just threw out an old washer over last winter, wish I would have thought of this. Next time our washer needs replacing I will grab the drum.
