This collection of my work is entitled, "Inspired from Haiku".
It has been while since I have got introduced to Haiku, the Japanese traditional poetry.
This kind of poetry has attracted my interest and attention as it combines form, content, and language in a meaningful, yet compact and minimal form, writes about everyday things. Many themes include nature, feelings, or experiences. Usually they use simple words and grammar. I have been inspired by these exceptional characteristics in order to shape and form my sculptures, choosing the technique of my work, its material, the form of pedestals and the way the exhibition has been organized and the sculptures have been placed at the Gallery during the exhibition period. This sense and theme of poetry has also been considered in making the presented short film.
Aluminum was the material I chose to work with because of its color, its ease in getting shaped and formed in metal casting which indeed helped me create the forms I was inspired from the poetry.
I have made the first modeling of my works from (Cork, Phellem), plastic wood and as shown in the film, the models were sent to the casting workshop to transfer to Aluminum with the technique of Aluminum casting.
I tried to exhibit Haiku's poetry characteristics, with an emphasis on its simplicity and its minimal form.
There is also the surface texture of the sculptures being shaped with in the form of lines and negative spaces some with in the combination of the other piece.
The aim was to display what I have conceived and comprehended from the following poems. Three examples of the Haiku poetry in which I have been inspired by has been attached to this essay for your kind attention.
The pedestals are simple cubic forms made out of Metal, colored in black. They have been considered simple and black to put the focus and attention on the sculptures.
The way the sculptures have been installed in the gallery area was inspired from the Japanese garden related to the ambience of the poetry of Matsuo Basho.
The short film is consisted from three parts; the first part includes the artist's Art studio and personal space.
The second part includes the short trip to the Aluminum Casting workshop and its environment and the process of casting.
The third part includes the Exhibition.
The purpose of this film was to show the three contrasting stages of the artist's work.
Contrast from the calm and relaxing personal space of the artist to the casting workshop working along with the technicians to the ambience of "Haft Samar" Art gallery.
