If you are a steam engine buff, you will love this video showing the actual workings of a ship's steam engine and the engineer. This is a video of the operation of the steam engine on the Swedish Steamboat SV Storskar. The ship is a working ferry operating out of Stockholm, Sweden operating during the summer months. Built in 1908, this vessel has been plying the waters around Stockholm for decades. The engineer told me that the engine is original and very reliable. This video shows the engine in operation while underway, with the engineer controlling the speed and direction of the steam engine as telegraphed down to the engine room by the captain. It is very interesting to watch how the signals are communicated from the ship's bridge down to the engine room and how quickly man and machine react accordingly. The SV Storskar was built in 1908 at Lindholmens Varv in Gothenburg. It is approximately 39 meters in length, 256 gross tons, and the triple-expansion steam engine produces 412 Kw, yielding a top speed of 13 knots.

  • Thanks for the nice comment. I took this video with my pocket sized Pentax Optio digital camera. I didn't think it would turn out as well as it did.

  • what are the actual functions of the levers he's working?

  • they control the engine speed and direction. the engineer controls the eng acording to the helmsman's telegraphed signals.

  • I like the way the engineer is in full control of the signals from the Old Man, yet able to carry on a pretty detailed conversation with an old timer at the same time!

  • @apeppink 3 cylinder. The only 4 cylinder engines were the type balanced by the Yarrow, Schlick and Tweedy system.

  • 1 controls the engines main regulator and the other is the switching gear for the reverseing engine. Notice the stephenson link. The angle of the stephenson link can be changed so that the engine can rotate in both directions. On the ships i went on you have 1 lever for crank end - and crank case (reverseing gear) 2 levers HP and LP cylinders and 1 Main regulator lever + a silent blow valve.

  • Beautiful engine, love the sound under load.

  • Gorgeous! I've been in a couple of engine rooms, I softa feel home everytime I'm down there. Hopefully I might work on one of the steamers one day.

  • Man he's getting some bells. Nice old engine. HP, IP , 2 LP's? Wonder what the full load heat rate is?

  • Sädes you rule man!!

  • I envy that guys job!
