Here is a proof of concept that I did for a Wind Turbine and Solar charging system connected to a charge controller system. The solar panel is simply two small 5w panels wired in parallel to get 10w of power. The wind turbine is a custom built housing with a small PMA motor connected to 24in blades. The turbine puts out about 100 150 watts on average; however I will likely need to use some type of 2:1 gear setup with more blades to get more efficiency from the motor.

  • how much it cost

  • @MrMotelone Hard to say... the turbine it self is about 150 bucks. I have more like 500 in my new updated system. Thanks for the comment.

  • Nice video, thanks. If it has an output of 100W on average does that mean it can generate: 100W x 24hours = 2.4 kWh a day?

And what kind of motor should I use, will any permanent magnet DC motor do the job?

  • @PBFloyd7 Thanks for the comments... yes, in theory 100W x 24 hours would be 2.4 KWh a day. That being said, its not realistic. You would need a lot of really good wind for that. Where I live I don't have good wind all day long, its usually only the morning or evening. Any PMA motor would work, but you need one that puts out HIGH amps at low rpm. Good luck with your projects...

  • I am attempting to do my own small turbine but some of the math is confusing me. How many kwh do you get from your turbine?

  • @12speak34 Good question, the key to this answer is sustained output. I really only see about 55 - 100 watts sustained output from my new rig. It can peak up to 250 watts in large winds, but these are not avg. One thing I would say people need to keep in mind.

  • bigger panels dude

  • very freaking cool.

  • Great Job! I'm Green with envy, lol. Will start on mime soon.

  • I'm gonna build a small wind turbine but I don't know what kind of generator to use.

My goal is to charge an ipod/iphone etc. so 5-35V is okay and max 1A.

I guess the blades will be pretty small but right now I want to now what kind of generator I should buy. If you have any ideas please PM me, ebay-links would be great and advices are also appricieated. My english is not perfect, I know.
