Hey wendy, I bought the violin on ebay for $40, but beware, it is really junk for a violin. Being as he was very young, we decided to start with something that he could get a sound out of, and looked like a violin, and switch to a real violin if he got better. Also, we did not have to fear him breaking the violin we gave him. Almost 2 years later, he hasn't played the violin much... maybe he'll pick it up again when he's 4 :)
