Today's Fossil of the Day goes to Denmark for calling for a politically binding treaty rather than a legally binding treaty to come out of international climate negotiations in December in Copenhagen. Casper Leiholt, First Secretary at the Danish Embassy in Berlin, responsible for climate matters, accepted the award in the reception area of the Nordic Embassies. While we gave this negative award to encourage Denmark to step up and be a real leader as the host country for these important talks, the representative at the Danish embassy in Berlin made some fair points about wanting to get the best deal out of Copenhagen that is POSSIBLE.
That is, if the US won't sign a LEGALLY binding deal, at least get a deal that the US will sign on to that could later be developed into something legally binding. There's still a lot of work to be done, though, before Copenhagen. If we keep pushing, *especially in the US for a strong, eventual climate change bill out of Congress*, our calls for bold, binding, and just outta COP-15 in Copenhagen may still be heard.
