"From a Whisper to a Scream" garnered a Grammy nomination in 1972. When Phillips lost to the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, the soul diva presented the trophy to Phillips, saying she should have won it instead.
Ill health sadly undermined this artist's undoubted potential. Phillips' long-term heroin dependency, combined with heavy drinking, led to her death from liver and kidney failure in Carson, California in 1984, at the age of 48.

  • I tried to upload the Allen Toussaint version of this tune (which I like a bit better). But the powers that be said I was infringing on copyright. WTF world.

  • what a talent, so sad to be taken from us so early in her life

  • @jrogers71 Allen did a very nice version however Esther brought so much passion to this song, I love it and I am a man.... Not to say men don't feel and by No Way did she Butcher this song But what she did do was Bring It On Home!

  • 2:08 sample is wicked :D

  • Wonderful voice...

  • Wow, Brings back great memories. As original as You can Get.

  • My man 9th Wonder sent me here. This is great! RIP

  • One of my favorite Esther Phillips performances. So much passion, pain and soul...and that stunning arrangement!

  • You don,t hear songs like this any more. Is Esther Phillips still living?

  • @duinme That was a silly thing to say. Butchered? I could imagine Allen Toussaint being blown away by this version. Palmer's verson is also great, I would think anyone hip enough to dig that album would be more respectful but.. Different Strokes!

  • Thank you so very much for this posting, and the others from this CLASSIC Creed Taylor production. It brings back so many..."restless"...feelings from my old days in Detroit.

  • Love this, no wonder Aretha was touched by it, how could you not be!
