Silk Road Dance Company: Andalusian Scarf Dance
This dance blends elements of the elegant court dance of al-Andalus with the Sufi ritual of zikr, a spiritual practice of remembrance which leads to inner peace. The text of the song comes from poetry of the great Muslim metaphysical thinker, Ibn al-Arabi, (1164-1240) who wrote of mystical love as a path to knowing the Divine. This idea is mirrored in the text which begins with a seemingly secular love poem -- with her words she brings me back to life -- and ends with the Shahada, the Muslim declaration of Faith, there is one God, and Mohammad is His Prophet.
