"Years ago, my staff took me kicking and screaming into the instant messaging world where I, for some reason, did not see a lot of value in the business. Some years later, I'm probably the biggest user of instant messaging in our company because I can multitask. I can talk with seven people at once. I can talk to my field consultants. You know, its got levels of expectations for when its appropriate to contact people and when its not appropriate to contact people. It has really fueled efficiency. Its amazing.
I think its important to take these different perspectives on how people are using these technologies. Many times they start off using them in ways that are not too productive for work. But I think its that exposure and that time to play with technologies that gets you to a point where you can then take full advantage of them down the road. And thats hugely positive. So, with my experience with instant messaging, Im much more open to experiencing that with newer technologies. And that type of story actually helps as we sell to our clients, where we can walk them through the process. It used to be the old e-mail story where you talked about Remember when e-mail was dispensable? And now its indispensable. Instant messaging was indispensible and now its indispensable. I think all these new technologies will follow a similar curve."
