@Plato86 If you're lucky to have desire & physicality to continue to train, someday you'll hit your fighting "wall". For most it's before their mid 30's. There are anomalies like: George Foreman & Randy Couture who won belts in their 40's. In the NFL, Brett Farve=anomaly playing @ 40.
No other MMA guy was a "legitimate contender" in their 40's. @ 35, Nog is already in a legitimate contender "gray area". Sylvia hit his wall & wasn't a legit contender by 32.
Please do not give me that nonsense about Couture's age, heigh or weight having anything to do with his lost. Throughout his career Couture has fought much younger and bigger opponents and his world class wrestling and boxing consistently brought him the victory. Tim Sylvia is an example of a much bigger and younger opponent Couture managed to beat without trouble. Give me a break.
@Plato86 BJ Penn is a big Blauer fan. When several UFC champs were invited to see MCMAP training, they became fans. I don't love MCMAP, but considering that 2 guys had to come up with a mandatory martial arts program to be administered to 250,000 Marines, I think they did a great job. These 2 weren't full time martial artists for the past 20 years like Vunak, Blauer or McCann & they had much more material to cover than anyone ever. So giving them anything but kudos is ignorant to the job @ hand.
@Plato86 Bruce Lee pointed it out over 40 years ago & because of MMA, people are starting to see it today. You have to step outside of "your" gym & find out who does the best of "this" & "that". Systems look for answers with in their system's framework & THAT IS THE PROBLEM. BJJ proved it to the stand up systems & after a few modifications, the wrestlers proved it to BJJ. The combatives guys picked up what they saw in MMA & are showing people how to best apply it to the street.
@Plato86 Yes, I have been to a BJJ gym, I have been to BJJ seminars & I study BJJ as part of keeping a complete tool box. BUT... in a self defense situation the BJJ is not going to come into play unless I hit the ground. My stand up is comprised of simple combatives style kicks & strikes & Thai kicks & elbows. Clinching includes Greco Roman, freestyle wrestling & some judo/jiujitsu (Japanese) techniques. Takedowns are Greco Roman, freestyle & Judo. Groundwork is freestyle & BJJ. Subs are BJJ.
@Plato86 Concerning Nogueira and Couture, yeah I guess that Nog is 13 years younger and that Randy was closer to 50yo than 40 AND the fact that Nog had over 30 pounds on him had nothing to do with it??? Get a reality check!!!
@Plato86 About the purple belt comment. Current champs Jones & Cruz, no BJJ purple belt. Edger and GSP, no BJJ purple belt when they hit top 10 & didn't need them to become champs, only have now from continuous on the job training. Former champs without: Lesner, Couture, Rampage, Evans, Griffin, Hendo, etc...
BJJ dominance ended when Sylvia, Liddell, Franklin, Hughes & Sherk held every title belt & none held a BJJ purple belt. Since then, every champ is more MMA than any 1 style.
LOL you think that the BJJ you see in competition is the same BJJ we use for self defense? Seriously have you ever been to a BJJ gym ever? If I get a double leg takedown on the street I am not going to try and establish base and submit the guy, I am going to stomp him. The only time a BJJ would every go to the ground in the street is if his opponent put him there, all other times we are looking to throw, trip or take down or opponent so he is on the ground and at a disadvantage.
Look everybody who competes at a high level in MMA is atleast a purple belt in BJJ so it is kinda silly to speak about "wrestlers" ending the dominance of BJJ. A pure wrestler with only basic boxing and basic guard and submission defense would still get tooled by a high level BJJ guy. Case in point Nog vs Couture. Couture's striking has come a long way but he is still very basic on the ground and that did him in against Nog. Need I even mention the dominance of BJ Penn and Damian Maia?
@Plato86 If you ever think you may be attacked (in this economy where crime rates are up & add to that, the fact that millions of people are about to have their unemployment benefits expire) the last thing you would ever want to rely on are those ridiculous Gracie knife & gun disarms.
The best pure grappler in the world will be f'd when 2 thugs approach from his right & left as he receives $300 from an ATM. Give the thugs knives & the best stand up guys are f'd. Thug = violent crime x-con.
