More than 15,000 media people are expected to invade St. Paul, Minnesota starting at the end of July to cover the Republican National Convention which is in September. Today media representatives got to look at how the convention will be set up. The UpTake's Mike McIntee went along to watch the media.

It's interesting that as local media organizations try to trim expenses, the number of press attending the RNC is increasing. Four years ago there were 5,000 radio people covering the RNC. This year there will be more than 7,000 radio people broadcasting from the Xcel. One RNC spokesperson I talked to said that an increased interest by the foreign press in US politics may be the reason behind the increase.

If you're blogger and planning to rely on wireless to cover the RNC, better come up with another plan. With so many people using cell phones and wireless, it is very likely any network you use may not work reliably.

One radio engineer I spoke with today was disappointed that the RNC had not yet assigned spaces on "Radio Row", making planning for radio stations a bit more difficult.

By the numbers:The media will occupy 450,000 square feet during the convention. The convention is using more than 100 hotels in the Twin Cites. Total attendance at the convention (delegates, alternates, volunteers, media and other guests) is expected to be about 45,000.

  • I hope the Paul supporters and the protesters make a mess of the Convention, that would make my week.

  • Why would anyone want to protest the Republicans????

  • "protest zones" are the shame of our modern election system. Party wants to rent a hall, that's fine. But they can't rent our rights. Outside the hall on the public sidewalk and stuff, anyone should be able to do any lawful thing just like anywhere. These parties come in and buy law enforcement to choke off dissent and rob people of their right to peaceably assemble and protest.

  • We are there to make a show of numbers, as RP asked. We're not there for trouble, however there will be a mess as we will be massive.

If we are over a third of the convention we will have out numbered both republican & democrats.

Because remember the media will be over half.

Plus we will be in a different location nearby!

Dont forget Washington July 12 That is a show of numbers & it will be fun with musicians, speakers ect..

  • Cash for food services.

    Wow.

  • the end of this clip is v. important - about access to the protestors. what a pr show! that's supposed to be the news? NOT!

  • 1:52 - That guy deserves a swift kick in the nuts.

  • Great, they'll be plenty of reporters to voer the planned Ron Paul riots!! Yay!

  • So he has to ask the city about whether he's allowed back out to talk to the protester's? Even though the guy that's talking is the one that's setting the rules on in's and out's...moron..

  • Interesting watch...

  • lol
