Elizabeth Gotsdiner, a college student, and Bert Sobanik, a displaced manufacturing worker, visit Flint, Michigan and get a look at an American town at rock bottom. A frank discussion of free markets and American safety nets. Elizabeth goes to a Michigan McCain rally and Bert meets Barack Obama, but neither come away uplifted by the experience. Purple States is a mini-documentary series about a group of five randomly-selected American citizens following the campaign trail for the Washington Post. Obama the candidate said he would do something about outsouricing. Now Obama the president says he doesnt want those jobs here. We are giving away our scientific and high tech foundation of our country., With outsourcing, there are no entry level jobs. So within a few more years, china and India wil have it all. They will have the high tech jobs, and we will be flipping burgers. What happened Mr Obama? How did you lose your way? Did somebody bribe you?

Its more than manufacturing. I work in pharmaceutical research. Within the last 3 years. 3/4 of my department lost their jobs, outsourced to china and india. These are the top end hig tech jobs. These people all have masters and PhD's. Some of my friends have been out for more than a tear, with no job in sight. Obama said he was going to change the tax code or what not, to create an even playing field.

I live in a small community in east central indiana and I have watched many, many manufacturing jobs leave our communities. In Anderson, Delco Remy (several plants) and Gm are gone, In New Castle, Chrysler has been taken over and in Muncie, empty buildings and lots stand where factories once prospered. Sooo many people have lost their jobs and not to mention those who could have worked their in the future. No wonder no one can pay their mortgages, everyone lost their job!
