Our Waterloo Engineering 4th year design project from 2008 playing a portion of Dust in the Wind. It's a system of 43 solenoids controlled by a 16-bit PIC microcontroller interfaced to a laptop through the serial port. It can also be played with a Guitar Hero controller by programming chords and scales to each button on the controller. We had very limited budget and time, so there are many things we wish we could have improved such as the noise level of the mechanisms.

  • Is it possible to extend the note range?

  • Yes, by adding more solenoids. It's not a very good solution but it would work. The robot guitars on here that use pneumatics are much better but we didn't have the time or budget for that.
