Carol St Day is a traditional Cornish Carol from the village of St Day in the mining area near Redruth.. After the Cornish language fell from common use the Cornish words were lost for a while. The rather awkward English translation survived and, with the renaissance of Cornish, the ancient text was revived. It flows far more comfortably than the English version.
Carol St Day
Tune Cornish trad.
Now the holly bears a berry as white as the milk,
And Mary she bore Jesus all wrapped up in silk.
And Mary she bore Jesus, our saviour for to be,
And the first tree in the greenwood it was the holly
Holly, holly,
And the first tree in the greenwood it was the holly
Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass,
And Mary she bore Jesus who died on the cross.
Now the holly bears a berry as blood it is red,
And Mary bore Jesus who rose from the dead.
Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal,
And Mary she bore Jesus who died for us all.

Dear Yvonne, Your videos never, never disappoint in their unique subject matter, presentation,
enjoyment and enrichment! This is no exception! Your voice is warm and inviting. Your enunciation and meaningful interpretation of the lyrics is clear, and the story of the carol
is wonderfully told. Visuals are expressive and the natural wonders of the Cornwall
seascape are poetic. Thank you for making the Holiday Season bright!
