1 dead, 4 hurt as truck trailer falls on busy Toronto highway (CBC NEWS) November 5th 2008
One man was killed and four people were injured Wednesday morning when the trailer of a transport truck hauling copper pipe flipped over a guardrail and crashed onto a highway below.
One of the busiest highway intersections in Toronto has been closed so police can investigate.
The accident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 427, the Queen Elizabeth Way and the Gardiner Expressway in southwest Toronto.
Police say the transport truck was driving on the 427, heading for the city and took the exit ramp. On the ramp, the truck's trailer somehow came undone and went over the barrier, landing about 15 metres below on the eastbound lanes of the QEW.
Three cars, an SUV and a pickup truck were struck by the trailer.
A 53-year-old man from Oakville, just west of Toronto, was travelling on the main commuter artery with his 18-year-old daughter when the trailer plummeted and landed on their car.
He reportedly suffered severe head injuries and died.
"We have a total of six vehicles involved in this collision, that's including the tractor-trailer," said Sgt. Dave Woodford of the OPP. "There are four underneath the debris, or involved in the debris."
The transport was carrying copper pipes that ended up strewn across the highway.
Ambulances, an air ambulance, fire trucks and police vehicles all rushed to the scene.
"There were five people transported to hospital," said Woodford, including the badly injured man who later died.
Among the other four taken to Trillium Hospital was the driver of the transport truck.
"He had a broken jaw, so he's not going to be held long. We have officers at the hospital waiting to talk to the drivers," said Woodford.
For commuters, it means a traffic nightmare. Eastbound lanes of the QEW will remain closed all day Wednesday, as well as the ramps leading from southbound 427 to the QEW and the Gardiner Expressway.
Police say, so far, they have no explanation for what caused the accident.
