  • Shirod Younker (one of Oregon's most promising Native artists) and Joanne Shenandoah greet me. I watch the tribe's boat races in replicas of their old vessels. Windy! We honor the salmon, observing Jason Younker, a tribal member seen in the water sending the first caught's skeleton back to the ancesters so that they will return in the spring. We meet the chief (the elderly man seen with Joanne.) Later, in Joanne's suite, we hear more of her songs and those of her daughter, Leah, a future star.

  • The first photo is, of course, the teeshirt for the event. Next is the guest of honor, the first caught salmon, whose skeleton is returned to the water with respect and the prayer that they will return in the spring. Shirod Younker and Joanne Shenandoah, the concert guest for the event, welcomed me. The other photos include the salmon cooking - two kinds, one underground and one above, and the men who prepared it for us.
